Component Studies
- The final Terms of Reference (TOR) for the Bio-physical Component Study, the Socio-economic Component Study and the Modelling Component Study have been posted on the Petitcodiac website under the EIA Information link located on the homepage. Work is in progress to finalize the Bio-physical Component Study and the Socio-economic Component Study reports.
- Progress is being made on drafting the Modelling Component Study report while the models are being run for the various project options.
Field Program
- The atmospheric fieldwork and the noise level monitoring activities were completed in June.
- As a follow up to the Fish Passage Workshop, water sampling to determine the dissolved oxygen levels in the headpond was conducted. Sampling was carried out in the early morning hours before sunrise on July 12, 2004. Five locations were selected for this sampling exercise (above the causeway, across from Turtle Creek, at Boundary Creek, at Route 112 and at Mitton Pool). All sample results have indicated a dissolved oxygen level above the guideline concentration of 5 mg/L. This field activity completes the PRC EIA fieldwork.
TRC Meetings
Meetings with the Technical Review Committee (TRC) was held on June 1 and 2, 2004. The meetings were scheduled to update the committee on the progress of the PRC EIA and specifically on the progress of the modelling component study. The results of the Fish Passage Workshop exit questionnaire were also presented and discussed with the TRC.
Consultation Activities
Consultation activities during the month of June included a meeting with the Lake Petitcodiac Preservation Association (LAPPA) held on June 15, 2004. Consultation activities during the month of July included a lobster boat tour with the Alma Fishermen’s Association on July 8, 2004. Water sampling was also conducted near Horton at high tide to determine the total suspended sediment concentration in the Bay of Fundy. A presentation to the Town of Riverview Council was conducted on July 19, 2004. The presentation focused on the progress and the status of the Petitcodiac River Causeway Environmental Impact Assessment and resulted in detailed discussion with the Council. Written comments and concerns from the Town of Riverview were received on July 30, 2004. The Town’s concerns are related to the recreational, habitat and firefighting values within the headpond, erosion and pollution issues as well as the study limitations and the economic analysis. A meeting with the Greater Moncton Sewerage Commission was held on July 22 to update the Commission on the PRC EIA project and to discuss future plans at the sewage treatment plant. Members of the AMEC Study Team had a tour of the Greater Moncton Wastewater Treatment Plant on July 27, 2004. A meeting with the Petitcodiac Riverkeeper was also held on July 22 to discuss the status of the PRC EIA.
A fish aging report as well as a summary of the Fish Passage Workshop and an updated frequently asked questions (FAQ’s) have all been posted on the project website. The tracking log has also been updated to include the comments and questions raised during the June and July meetings and will shortly be posted on the project website.
