For Immediate Release

September 25, 2003

Hydrodynamic and sediment transport modelling will be the prime focus at an upcoming public workshop slated for Saturday, October 18 at Polyvalente Mathieu-Martin, as part of the Petitcodiac River Causeway Environmental Impact Assessment. Similar workshops on the BioPhysical and Socio-Economic components of the EIA were held earlier in Moncton and Riverview.

"Interested stakeholders, community representatives and residents throughout the Petitcodiac River watershed and estuary are invited to take part in this third session of our technical workshop series. Draft Terms of Reference for the hydrodynamic and sediment transport component will be the central topic for discussion," said Jacques Paynter, the Study Facilitator.

The October 18 event will begin at 8:30 AM, is open to the news media, and lunch will be provided. Ecole Polyvalente Mathieu-Martin is located at 511 Champlain Street in Dieppe.

Computer-based modelling of how river and tidal flows will impact sediment transport under each of the four modification options proposed for the existing causeway is a key aspect of the EIA process.

"The Canadian Hydraulic Centre of the National Research Council is leading this element of the study. Zero-dimensional and one-dimensional models have already been employed to gain an understanding of existing hydraulic and sediment transport processes, and identify additional data required for the more complex models. In conjunction with this preliminary modelling activity, an extensive data collection program has been underway for several months, " said Mr. Paynter.

He noted that space at the October 18 workshop is limited and all interested parties are encouraged to register as participants, no later than October 10th. Mr. Paynter can be reached at the telephone numbers and addresses listed below.
